Think twice - stay off the ice

Icy Ponds are DangerousKeep yourself, your family and your pets safe each winter and think twice about venturing onto icy ponds. Ponds in our community ice over during the winter, but the constant freezing and thawing cycle creates unstable ice conditions that can quickly change. Seemingly solid ice can fracture quickly and may result in tragedy.

  • Children should always be supervised around open water sources and educated about the dangers of walking or playing on icy ponds.
  • Pets should always be kept on a leash around bodies of water.

Be prepared

If you see another person or animal fall through the ice:

  • Call 911 immediately
  • Do not follow a victim out onto the ice -- people who try to help often become victims themselves
  • From the shore, try to reach a victim with ladder, stick, pole, or rope – or throw them something that floats

Metro District Rules and Regulations prohibit ice fishing and walking on ice covered pond surfaces.
