Sightings of bobcats have been on the rise for several years in Highlands Ranch. As the more than 2,500 acres of Metro District open space have matured, the habitat for these wild felines has become more inviting.

With taller trees and more reliable water sources, forage and cover are better for bobcats than they would have been in the past. According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, bobcat sightings occur widely in North America and range statewide in Colorado. They primarily hunt rabbits, but will also eat mice, voles and birds. They are active throughout the year and typically produce their litters in the spring.

"Bobcats aren't known for coming into residential yards and confronting pets. However, when dealing with any type of wildlife, owners should always be cautious and supervise their pets while outside," said Scott Nelson, Metro District open space supervisor.

CPW encourages everyone to help keep wildlife wild -- don't feed, don't approach and don't harass animals
