GeocachingGeocaching is an outdoor treasure hunt appropriate for people of all ages. It is a great activity to do as a family, or with a group of friends. It’s an adventure!

Geocache in Highlands Ranch

When you geocache, you use a GPS device or a smart phone to locate hidden caches. Enter the GPS coordinates into your device and navigate your way to the location. Once there, start searching for the hidden cache or treasure. Caches are typically filled with a log book and sometimes small trinkets, toys or souvenirs.

The Highlands Ranch Metro District allows people to geocache in parks and open space areas in the community as long as park rules are followed.

Geocaching programs are available by request for scout troops and other groups. For more information about geocaching in Highlands Ranch, please call 720-240-5919.


How to Geocache

  1. Identify a cache for your treasure hunt at www.geocaching.com.
  2. Get outdoors and search for your cache.
  3. Once you find a cache:
    1. Sign the log book
    2. Take something from the cache
    3. Leave something in the cache
    4. Return the cache to its original location
  4. Log your find online and share your experience with others.

Metro District Park Rules

Parks and trails are open daily from 5:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m.

Dog parks are open daily from 7:00 a.m. to sunset.

In accordance with Metro District Land Use Rules Section 11.2 – Damage or misuse of District property is prohibited.

Parks and open space rules are enforced as authorized in Colorado Revised Statutes 18-9-117 and Douglas County Resolution R-999-177.

Geocacher’s Creed

Geocachers have an appetite for adventure and an appreciation for the outdoors. Whether you are heading out on your own treasure hunt or you are placing a new cache, please follow the Geocacher’s Creed and local park rules.

When Placing or Seeking Geocaches, I Will:

  • Not endanger myself or others.
  • Observe all laws and rules of the area. Please note, caches are never buried, neither partially nor completely.
  • Respect property rights and seek permission where appropriate. Cache placements do not damage, deface or destroy public property.
  • Avoid causing disruptions or public alarm.
  • Minimize my and others’ impact on the environment. Leave no trace. Wildlife and the natural environment are not harmed in pursuit of geocaching.
  • Be considerate of others.
  • Protect the integrity of the game pieces.
