Creative ways to recognize Memorial Day during the COVID-19 pandemic
May 11, 2020

The Highlands Ranch Metro District invites residents to recognize Memorial Day this year remotely but together as a community. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the local Highlands Ranch Memorial Day Service has been canceled. However, Metro District staff have created a list of ways you can commemorate the holiday this year while adhering to the Safer-at-Home guidelines.

Memorial Day is a day to honor the more than one million men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Despite the current public health concerns, we can still come together to recognize those who gave their life while serving our country.

  • Visit the Highlands Ranch Veterans Monument during the month of May. The Monument features dedication tiles of Highlands Ranch residents who have served our country. Take time to walk through the monument and read the names on the tiles. hrvets.org
  • Support Operation Gratitude through virtual Support deployed troops, national guardsmen, first responders, and emergency medical personnel on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic. www.operationtratitude.com
  • Order a family tribute box through Memorial Day Flowers and receive roses to place at Fort Logan National Cemetery. The purchase supports the placement of 25 flowers at Arlington National Cemetery. memorialdayflowers.org
  • Write letters to soldiers and their families through A Million Thanks. The organization collects and distributes millions of letters of thanks and support and sends them directly to active, reserve and military veterans. amillionthanks.org
  • Create your own Memorial Day poppy and proudly wear it on Memorial Day. Poppies are worn to commemorate the sacrifice of so many men and women who have given their lives fighting for our country. https://heyletsmakestuff.com/tissue-paper-poppy
  • Watch the National Memorial Day Concert with your family on Sunday, May 24 at 8 p.m. EST. The annual concert is broadcast on PBS. It features uplifting musical performances and documentary footage to honor the men and women in uniform and their families. pbs.org/national-memorial-day-concert
  • Tune into the Metro District’s Facebook page on Memorial Day at approximately 2:50 p.m. and enjoy a tribute to our local veterans as resident and Highlands Ranch Concert Band member Jeff Emmanuel plays Taps at the Highlands Ranch Veterans Monument. Then join people across the country in a moment of silence at 3 p.m. to honor all who gave their life while serving our country. facebook.com/highlandsranchmetrodistrict
